SEVEN THINGS
one minute a morning
GIVES BACK

You didn't stop loving them. There was just nowhere left to put it. One page, every morning — and here is what changes, week after week.

Something to do
for them

The photographs, the ring, the box in the loft. Everything you have is you holding something. None of it goes anywhere near them.

Every page has a prayer written for the person you lost. Not about them. For them. It asks for something on their behalf, and it takes about a minute. That is the whole mechanism, and there is nothing else in the world that does it.

The words
you didn't have

Most people never say their name out loud again because they genuinely do not know what you are supposed to say to someone who is gone. Do you thank God? Do you ask for something?

It is already written. Four or five lines, said out loud, at your own kitchen table. Nothing to fill in, no prompts, no exercises, nothing that asks you to describe a memory.

Their name,
out loud again

By the fourth year you say their name in a conversation and there is a half second pause. Nobody is unkind. People just don't know what to do with it, so you learn to stop.

In your own kitchen nobody has to make a face. You say their name every single morning, out loud, and it stops being a thing you avoid. Most people tell us this is the part they didn't expect.

A moment that isn't
a sad one

Every page opens with a short true story about someone who lost someone. And they are not tragic. Some of them are barely about dying at all. A few of them are close to funny.

One is about a woman who kept paying her dead husband's phone bill for seven years so his number would never be given to a stranger. You don't finish it feeling bereaved. You finish it feeling recognised — and those are not the same thing.

One minute,
and the day starts

A grief journal asks you to sit down and write out your feelings. A person with a job and a family is not going to do that, and if they did, where would it go? In a drawer.

This takes about sixty seconds. You open it, you read it, you close it, and the day starts. Most people do it before the coffee. It fits in a coat pocket, a handbag, a car door.

Somewhere to put
the things you'd tell them

A grandchild's wedding. A tree down in a storm. A driving test passed. Years of small news and nobody in the house who would have wanted to hear it.

You read the page, and then you tell them. Out loud, in an empty kitchen, where nobody can hear you. It gives you somewhere to put things. That is what people say about it more than anything else.

They stay
in the world

The real fear is not forgetting them. It's that in ten years the grandchildren will know two things: that they were old, and that they died.

A name said out loud in a kitchen every morning is a name a child hears and asks about. They stop being a photograph and go back to being a person somebody talks about. A garden stone can't do that.

QUESTIONS
PEOPLE ASK US

You have 60 days to decide. If it isn't what you hoped, write to contact@trylonnis.com and we take care of the rest.

Is this a sad book?

No, and it's the thing people are most surprised by. Every page opens with a short true story about someone who lost someone, and they are not tragic ones. Some are barely about dying at all. A few are close to funny.

One is about a woman who kept paying her late husband's phone bill for seven years so his number would stay his. You don't finish it feeling low. You finish it feeling recognised.

What's actually on a page?

Four things, in the same order every day: a short true story, a line or two of scripture, a prayer for the person you lost, and a shorter one for you.

Nothing to fill in. No prompts, no exercises, nothing that asks you to write about a memory. You open it, you read it, you close it.

How long does it take each morning?

About a minute. Most people do it before the coffee, at the kitchen table, and then the day starts.

It's small enough to live in a coat pocket, a handbag or a car door, so a lot of people read it wherever they happen to be at that time of day.

Do I have to be religious?

No. Plenty of readers haven't been inside a church in years. The prayers are written in plain, ordinary words to be said out loud by anybody, not recited.

If you do go to church, it sits alongside that rather than replacing anything.

Does it work for anyone I've lost?

Yes. The pages are written for the person you lost, whoever that is: a husband, a wife, a mother, a father, a friend.

Nothing on the page assumes a particular relationship, so it works exactly the same whether they died last spring or twenty years ago.

Does it start on January 1st?

There's a page dated for every day of the year, so you start on the day it arrives. Whatever today is, there's a page for it.

You never read the same one twice, and after a year you can start again on any date you like.

Is it a good gift?

It's what most people buy it for. There's a blank dedication page at the front so you can write their name in before you give it.

It arrives in a plain box with no pricing inside, so it can go straight to whoever it's for.

What if they don't open it?

It happens, and usually not for long. It's a small object that sits on a counter, and most people open it within the first couple of weeks, quietly, on their own.

There's nothing to sign up to and nothing to keep up with. One page, whenever they're ready.

Should I get two?

A lot of people do. One to keep and one ready to give, because the moment you need it is rarely the moment you'd think to order it.

Two copies are $59.90 instead of $79.80.

Who wrote it?

Somebody who went looking for this exact book after losing someone, and couldn't find it. Eight months of writing, 365 pages, every true story checked against its source.

Not one of them was written to make you cry.

How is it made?

A pocket hardback: 384 pages, sewn rather than glued, cognac leather cover with a stitched cream label, gilded page edges and a burgundy ribbon marker.

Sewn binding is the reason it still closes properly after years of being opened every single morning.
